Vitamins vs Minerals: What’s the Difference – and Why Do We Need Both?

We hear the phrase “vitamins and minerals” so often that it’s easy to think of them as essentially the same thing. They’re both micronutrients, they’re both essential for our health, and we need relatively small amounts of them compared with things like protein, carbohydrates and fats.

But vitamins and minerals are actually quite different.

They come from different sources, behave differently in the body and have their own unique roles to play. And while we only need them in small quantities, those small quantities can make a very big difference.

So, what exactly separates a vitamin from a mineral?

What are vitamins?

Vitamins are organic compounds, meaning they’re made by living organisms such as plants and animals.

Our bodies need vitamins to carry out an enormous number of everyday processes, from supporting energy production and immunity to maintaining healthy skin, bones, vision and nervous system function.

There are 13 recognised essential vitamins, which are generally divided into two groups:

Water-soluble vitamins include vitamin C and the B vitamins. These dissolve in water and, with some exceptions, aren’t stored in large amounts by the body. This means we generally need to consume them regularly.

Fat-soluble vitamins include vitamins A, D, E and K. These are absorbed alongside dietary fats and can be stored in the liver and fatty tissues for later use.

One important characteristic of vitamins is that they can be relatively delicate. Heat, light, air, cooking and storage can all affect the vitamin content of foods to varying degrees.

What are minerals?

Minerals are different because they are inorganic elements that originate from the earth.

Plants absorb minerals from soil and water, and we then obtain them by eating plants, consuming animal foods, drinking water or using supplements when appropriate.

Unlike vitamins, minerals aren't created by plants or animals — and they can't be destroyed by heat in the same way vitamins can.

Some of the minerals you’ll probably recognise include:

  • Magnesium – involved in hundreds of biochemical reactions and important for normal muscle, nerve and energy function.

  • Zinc – contributes to normal immune function, wound healing and the maintenance of healthy skin.

  • Iron – essential for haemoglobin and the transport of oxygen around the body.

  • Calcium – important for bones and teeth as well as normal muscle and nerve function.

  • Selenium – a trace mineral involved in antioxidant defence and normal thyroid function.

  • Iodine – required for the production of thyroid hormones.

  • Chromium – a trace mineral involved in normal macronutrient metabolism.

We need some minerals in larger amounts, while others — known as trace minerals — are required in tiny quantities. But needing only a tiny amount doesn't mean they aren't important.

So, what's the main difference?

A simple way to remember it is:

Vitamins come from living things. Minerals come from the earth.

Vitamins are organic compounds that can be altered or broken down, while minerals are elements that retain their basic chemical identity.

But once they're inside the body, vitamins and minerals don't work independently. They form part of an incredibly interconnected system.

For example, vitamin D helps our body absorb calcium. Vitamin C can improve the absorption of non-haem iron from plant foods. Magnesium is involved in processes associated with vitamin D metabolism.

Rather than thinking about nutrients individually, it can be more helpful to think of them as members of a team.

Why do we need so many different nutrients?

The human body is carrying out thousands of chemical reactions every second — usually without us giving it a second thought.

Turning food into usable energy, contracting a muscle, producing hormones, maintaining bones, repairing tissue, supporting immune function and sending signals through the nervous system all depend on nutrients.

Vitamins and minerals often act as cofactors, essentially helping enzymes perform the reactions they’re designed to carry out.

This is one reason a balanced, varied diet is so important. There isn't one “super nutrient” that can do everything.

Our bodies need a broad spectrum.

Can we get everything we need from food?

Ideally, food should form the foundation of our nutrient intake.

A varied diet containing vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains and quality protein sources can provide an impressive range of vitamins, minerals and other beneficial compounds.

However, nutrient intake isn't always as simple as eat healthy food = get everything you need.

Individual requirements can differ depending on age, pregnancy, diet, lifestyle and certain health conditions. Some medications can also affect nutrient levels or absorption.

The nutrient content of food can vary too, and importantly, what we consume isn't necessarily the same as what our body absorbs and uses.

This is where concepts such as bioavailability become important.

More isn't always better

When we learn how important vitamins and minerals are, it's tempting to assume that taking more must be beneficial.

But nutrients don't work that way.

Some vitamins and minerals can accumulate in the body, and excessive supplementation can be harmful. Certain nutrients can also compete with one another for absorption or interact with medications.

Supplementation is best thought of as a way of supporting or filling a genuine nutritional need, rather than simply taking large amounts of everything “just in case”.

Depending on the individual, this might involve looking at diet, symptoms, lifestyle, medications and, where appropriate, pathology testing with a qualified healthcare practitioner.

The bigger picture: nourishment, not individual nutrients

One of the things we love about natural health is recognising just how interconnected the body really is.

Magnesium doesn't work in isolation. Neither does zinc, selenium, vitamin C or vitamin D.

They're all part of a much bigger nutritional picture.

Rather than chasing one vitamin or mineral at a time, a more holistic approach is to ask:

Are we giving our body the broad range of nutrients it needs to do what it naturally knows how to do?

Start with nourishing food. Aim for variety. Pay attention to what your body needs. And when supplementation is appropriate, choose thoughtfully rather than assuming more is always better.

Because sometimes the smallest nutrients have some of the biggest jobs.
